- with CODE (498) Japan version

"Navigation" function
The location of the vehicle, as well as the direction and distance to the destination (after entering the destination) are determined with the aid of the navigation system. The navigation system is used to calculate the data for reaching the destination (navigation). The navigation system is activated by pressing the "NAVI" button on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).

If the navigation digital versatile disk (DVD) is not inserted, the note "Please insert navigation DVD" appears in the navigation display. This note is provided to ensure that the user has inserted the correct DVD. The DVD ROM disk drive of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) can also play audio CDs.

Destination entry
The destination is entered menu-assisted on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) and is processed by the integrated navigation processor (N41/3). The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) offers the following options for destination input:
^ Map
^ Special destinations
^ Destination memory
^ Postal code
^ Last 10 destinations entered
^ Input via Hiragana (Japanese syllabary)
^ Address selection from lists (e.g. towns, districts)

Dynamic supplementation
The dynamic supplementation is realized when the destination is input manually. During the input of the destination the letters that are still missing are completed with the predictive text input (speller) using an existing list. The supplemented characters have a black background. Deleting can be accomplished character by character.

Position finding
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) calculates continuously the location of the vehicle with the aid of the following procedures:
^ Basic position finding (dead reckoning)
^ Global positioning system (GPS) position finding
^ Map-supported map matching

The navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) calculates the most probable location by constantly comparing the localizing results of these 3 methods.

Route calculation
The route is calculated in the navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) after destination input or automatically after a deviation from the proposed route. During dynamic navigation system, the route calculation is automatically influenced due to the integration of traffic information via the optional Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS). The incoming information is processed in the integrated FM multiplexer of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) and then shown on the display. The calculated route is stored in the navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).

To be able to use the dynamic navigation system, an external VICS 3-media box is required.

Route guidance
Navigation begins once the navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) has calculated the route .

3 types of display can be selected for graphic navigation:
^ with map
^ with map and symbol display before turn-off points
^ with symbol display (route control symbols)

It is possible to change arbitrarily between the 3 types of presentation. The navigation is also supported by voice output from the vehicle loudspeakers.
