Permanent Speed Limiter, general
The Permanent Speed Limiter (also called SPEEDTRONIC) is an additional function of Distronic PLUS, which is integrated in the radar sensors control unit (N62/1).
The Permanent Speed Limiter allows the driver to limit the maximum speed of the vehicle (e.g. for winter tires with a lower permissible maximum speed).
The set maximum speed is transmitted from the IC (A1) to the radar sensors control unit via the chassis CAN (CAN E).
The request for deceleration of the vehicle are transmitted by the radar sensors control unit to the CDI control unit (N3/9) (for a diesel engine) or to the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) (for gasoline engine) and to the Electronic Stability Program Premium control unit (N30/7) via the chassis CAN.
A switching request at the automatic transmission is transmitted from the radar sensors control unit via the chassis CAN and drive train CAN (CAN C) to the electronic transmission control control unit (N15/3) (for transmission 722.6) or to the fully integrated transmission control controller unit (Y3/8) (for transmission 722.9).
Function sequence for Permanent Speed Limiter
The engine performance is reduced if the vehicle approaches the set maximum speed.
If this is inadequate, the service brake is actuated proportionately and if necessary, the automatic transmission shifts to a lower gear so that the set maximum speed is not exceeded (e.g. in case of steep declivity).
The Permanent Speed Limiter is switched on/off by the IC using the left MFL left button group (S110) over the menu "Settings", submenu "Vehicle", menu item "Limitation (winter tire)".
The maximum speed can be set in 10 km/h increments from 160 to 240 km/h.
If the Permanent Speed Limiter is switched on, it is activated at the same time and can only be switched off or deactivated again through the menu in the instrument cluster.
A warning message is displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13) at about 10 km/h under the set maximum speed.
While the Permanent Speed Limiter is active, the Distronic PLUS or Variable Speed Limiter (except code (494) USA version) can be use independently of the set maximum speed, up to a maximum of 200 km/h.
