GF54.30-P-0002LEH Instrument Cluster (IC), Function

Instrument cluster (A1), general
The instrument cluster notifies the driver of all dynamic and static driving conditions as well as about the current condition of the systems installed in the vehicle.

In the event of any faulty or safety relevant vehicle functions, various warnings are displayed on the instrument cluster.

The following displays are incorporated in the instrument cluster in order to be able to convey information to the driver:
- Permanent displays (e.g. vehicle speed, rotational speed, tank contents)
- Indicator lamps (green, yellow or blue) (e.g. turn signals, high beams)
- Warning lamps (red) (e.g. coolant level, brake fluid level)
- Multifunction display (A1p13) (e.g. travel distance display)

The instrument cluster makes possible the following functions:
^ Activate instrument cluster function sequence
^ Indicator lamp test function sequence

The following functions are also possible; they are described in separate documents:
^ Indicator/warning messages, function
^ Display operating conditions, function
^ Comfort displays, function
^ Trip computer, function
^ Settings on workshop level, function

Activate instrument cluster function sequence
The background illumination of the multifunction display and the scale illumination of the instrument cluster is activated in the case of the following events:
- Unlocking the vehicle with the transmitter key (A8/1)
- Open or close driver door
- Change of status "Transmitter key inserted"
- Switching on the standing lights
- Activation of circuit 15R
- Operation of OK button (S110s6)
- Operation of "Back" and VCS Off button (S110s4)
- Operation of electric parking brake switch (S76/15)

After switching off circuit 15R, the instrument cluster remains active for another t = 30 s. if a fault exists this time is increased to t = 120 s.

Additional function requirements for indicator lamp test
^ Circuit 15 ON

Indicator lamp test function sequence
The indicator lamp test serves the function test of certain warning lamps and indicator lamps in the instrument cluster.
The instrument cluster automatically performs the indicator lamp test each time circuit 15 is switched on.
The EIS [EZS] control unit (N73) sends the status of circuit 15 to the chassis CAN (CAN E).

The function of the following warning and indicator lamps is checked during the indicator lamp test:
- electronic parking brake warning lamp (yellow)
- Automatic lane recognition indicator lamp (with code (476) Automatic lane recognition)
- Attention Assist indicator lamp
- PARKTRONIC warning indicator for t = 1 s (with code (220) PARKTRONIC or code (230) Exclusive parking assist)
- Fuel reserve warning light (A1e4)
- Brake fluid warning lamp (A1e7)
- Seat belt warning lamp (A1e9)
- Airbag indicator and warning light (A1e15)
- ABS indicator lamp (A1e17)
- Regenerative braking system indicator lamp (A1e20) (on vehicles with code (494) USA version: No symbol displayed but "RBS" text)
- ESP warning lamp (A1e41)
- ESP indicator lamp (A1e42)
- Engine diagnosis indicator lamp (A1e58)
- DTR warning lamp (A1e59) (with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS)
- Tire pressure monitor warning lamp (A1e66)

The indicator lamp test terminates when the engine is started (circuit 61 ON).

The function of the following indicator lamps is not checked:
- Left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1)
- Right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2)
- High beam indicator lamp (A1e3)
