Component Identification:
The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit allows portable CTELs (A34/6) from different manufacturers (z. B. Siemens, Motorola, Nokia) to be operated in the vehicle. The system installed in the vehicle is able to communicate with various portable CTELs. It is only necessary to install the corresponding UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface) required for the portable CTEL on the Universal Portable CTEL Interface contact plate.
Telephone operation
The telephone system can be operated as follows:
^ Directly at the radio control panel and navigation unit
^ Via the multifunction steering wheel in combination with the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster
^ With code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) via voice commands
Information can be displayed via the
^ Portable CTEL display
^ Instrument cluster display
^ The radio control panel and navigation unit display
The volume for telephone mode can be adjusted separately.
Following the request from the radio control panel and navigation unit, the mobile phone signals are transmitted and received using the telephone antenna. These signals are transmitted to the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit via the E-net compensator. The task of the E-net compensator is to compensate by amplification for losses occurring as a result of the higher transmission frequency of the telephone network. If operational, the telephone is represented on the display of the radio control panel and navigation unit by a symbol.
Similarly, the reception field strength of the telephone is displayed once it has been inserted into the UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface). All control signals and useful signals (e.g. sound signals with hands-free system activated) are transmitted by the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST).
The portable CTEL needs an interface to communicate with the MOST subscribers. This is provided via the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit. The battery of the portable CTEL is charged via the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit.
The battery is charged automatically as soon as the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI) control unit is active, and this irrespective of whether the portable CTEL is switched on or off.
The radio control panel and navigation unit is equipped with the following telephone functions:
^ Automatic disabling of telephone card when the personal identification number is entered incorrectly 3 times.
^ Direct dialing of the telephone number via the numerical keypad, display of the name of the person called (if the number entered is known)
^ Speed-dialing of the first 10 memory locations by pressing one key only or dialing all other memory locations by entering the 3-digit memory location number
^ Display of caller's number (if number transmitted)
^ Display of name, if telephone number is known
^ Read text messages
^ Telephone book processing
^ Notebook processing
^ Select from memory list using
- memory location numbers
- Names (alphabetic)
- List of last 10 numbers dialed
Hands-free mode
During a phone call it is possible for the user to hold the conversation via the hands-free system. For this the hands-free system microphone group is located in the inside rearview mirror unit. The microphone signals are forwarded directly to the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit via the overhead control panel control unit (N70), digitalized and transmitted to the radio control panel and navigation unit via MOST. In the radio control panel and navigation unit the signals are conditioned again and output via the vehicle speakers. Hand-free conversations are controlled by pushing the button on the operating unit of the radio control panel and navigation unit. During the hands-free conversation, the current audio source is automatically muted.
The hands-free system can be operated via the portable CTEL, the multifunction steering wheel or the radio control panel and navigation unit. The hands-free system cannot be operated if the portable CTEL is removed from the UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface).
Writing and editing text messages
In the service basic menu, the "Mail" button takes you to the menu for creating, sending or administering text messages (SMS). There are the following options:
^ Call up inbox
^ Call up outbox
^ Call up drafts box
^ create new messages
^ Select mail settings
The characters are input with the predictive speller of the portable CTEL or via the keypad on the panel of the radio control panel and navigation unit. These functions are also used for sending SMS messages; a receiver can be specified or dialed from the telephone book.
Data safety, SMS memory
If the battery voltage drops below 9.5 V, the characters in the memory of the radio control panel and navigation unit are preserved. However, it is possible for up to 4 characters to be lost. If switched off using the normal procedure, no characters are lost.
