Torque coordination, general
The torque interface in the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) coordinates and sets priorities for the requirements of all systems (according to drivability and priority setting), which determine engine torque requirement. It also determines how dynamically each request is to be met.
The following systems can make an engine torque request:

- The driver, through the accelerator pedal sensor (B37)
- Electronic Stability Program (ESP), via the chassis CAN (CAN E) from the Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/4) or Electronic Stability Program Premium control unit (N30/7 ) (on model 212 with DISTRONIC PLUS)
- Cruise control, via ESP control unit (except DISTRONIC PLUS)
- DISTRONIC PLUS, via chassis CAN and radar sensors control unit (N62/1) (on model 212 with DISTRONIC PLUS)
- Transmission control via drive train CAN (CAN C) from fully integrated transmission control unit (Y3/8)
- Maximum engine speed limitation
- Maximum vehicle speed limit
- Maximum torque limitation

Function sequence for torque coordination
According to the dynamic requirements, the ME-SFI [ME] control unit varies the engine torque requirement, by:

- Increasing and decreasing the injection time of injection valves (Y62) and the associated increase and decrease in the opening angle of front and rear throttle valve actuators (M16/3, M16/4)
- Advance or retard adjustment of the ignition angle of the ignition coils (T1) (this allows very rapid variation of the engine torque)
- Combination of adaptation of injection time, throttle valve angle and ignition angle

Torque reserve
If the injection time is increased and the ignition angle is retarded at the same time, the engine torque remains the same at first.
However, the engine torque can then be raised very quickly by advancing the ignition angle.
