Gasoline injection and ignition system ME-SFI, general
The gasoline injection and ignition system ME-SFI is supplied by "Robert Bosch GmbH" and, in combination with the sensors and actuators on engine 156 AMG, forms the "ME 9.7 AMG" engine timing.

The abbreviated designation "ME 9.7 AMG" means:
M = Motronic
E = Electronic accelerator pedal
9.7 = Version 9.7 AMG = AMG specific hardware and software

The ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) contains the whole engine timing.
The engine timing system reads in sensor data both directly and via the CAN network and actuates the corresponding actuators. Here the individual functions and systems of the engine timing are controlled and coordinated by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.
The following table represents the model and major assembly overviews for the engine 156 AMG:

The engine timing is subdivided into the following systems:
^ Basic functions
^ Engine system
^ Injection system
^ Ignition system
^ Exhaust system

Basic functions
- Control unit diagnosis
- Fault memory
- On-board diagnosis II (OBD II)
- Diagnosis via CAN
- CAN network
- Flash programming
- Variant coding
- Drive authorization system stage 3 (DAS 3)
- Torque coordination
- Heat management
- Alternator interface
- Maximum vehicle speed limit

Diagnosis
For diagnostic purposes, the fault codes from the engine timing can be read off and deleted with Xentry Diagnostics, and specific diagnostic functions initiated.

CAN network
Via the connected drive train CAN (CAN C) and chassis CAN (CAN E), the ME-SFI [ME] control unit exchanges data with the other control units integrated in the CAN network.
The ME-SFI [ME] control unit also acts as the interface (gateway) between the two CAN bus systems.

Flash programming
The engine timing in the ME-SFI [ME] control unit is flash programmable, that is the complete software in the control unit can be replaced using the Xentry diagnostics (replaced). The software required for control unit programming can be found on the Star Diagnosis software DVD.

Variant coding
Using variant coding the following vehicle versions and equipment can be coded using Xentry Diagnostics:
- Vehicle model
- National version
- Exhaust variants
- Transmission version
- With or without a catalytic converter

Engine system
- Start relay actuation
- Throttle valve control
- Safety fuel shutoff
- Transmission overload protection

- Support brace for Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
- Support brace for fully integrated transmission control (VGS)
- Starting torque limitation
- Suction fan actuation
- Controlled intake/exhaust camshaft adjustment
- Throttle valve calibration
- Intake manifold length switchover
- Engine oil cooling

Injection system
- Sequential port injection
- Cylinder-selective fuel metering
