Component Identification:

Function
In selector lever position "P" the taper slides between the park detent and the pilot bushing. As a result the park detent is pressed against the park pawl gear. If when the vehicle is stationary the tooth of the park detent does not enter a tooth space, but onto a tooth of the park pawl gear, then the taper is pre-compressed by the spring and is in a readiness position. When the park pawl gear turns further, the park detent engages in the next tooth gap.

In order to prevent damage due to incorrect operation, the tooth space widths are designed so that the park detent only engages when the vehicle is stationary or is creeping along. If the vehicle rolls faster, the shape of the teeth prevents the parking lock pawl from engaging.
