Permanent Speed Limiter, general
The Permanent Speed Limiter allows the driver to set (limit) the maximum speed of the vehicle (e.g. for winter tires with a lower permissible maximum speed).

The Permanent Speed Limiter (also referred to as SPEEDTRONIC) is an additional function of DISTRONIC that is integrated in the ESP, SPS [PML] and BAS control unit (N47-5).

Permanent Speed Limiter, function sequence
The set maximum speed is transmitted from the instrument cluster to the ESP control unit over the engine compartment CAN.
The request to slow down the vehicle is transmitted from the ESP control unit to the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) over the engine compartment CAN.
A request to automatic transmission for shifting gears is transmitted to the ETC [EGS] control unit (N15/3) or to the electric controller unit (VGS) (Y3/8) over the engine compartment CAN.

The engine performance is reduced if the vehicle approaches the set maximum speed.
If this is inadequate, the service brake is actuated proportionately and if necessary, the automatic transmission shifts to a lower gear so that the set maximum speed is not exceeded (e.g. in case of steep declivity).

Activation or deactivation
The Permanent Speed Limiter is switched on or off through the menu "Settings", submenu "Vehicle", menu item "Speed Limit (winter tires)" in the instrument cluster.
The maximum speed can be set in 10 km/h increments from 160 to 240 km/h.
If the Permanent Speed Limiter is switched on, it is activated at the same time and can be switched off or deactivated again only through the menu in the instrument cluster.

The set maximum speed is displayed in the left multifunction display of the instrument cluster.

When the Permanent Speed Limiter is active, DISTRONIC or the Variable Speed Limiter (except code (494) USA version) can be used up to the set permanent maximum speed.
