N3/10 ME-SFI [ME] control unit

Location
The ME-SFI [ME] control unit is located at the upper middle on the engine.

Task
The ME-SFI control unit fulfills the following tasks:
^ Controlling the basic engine functions
^ Reading in of sensors and signals
^ Evaluation of input factuators
^ Output of signals and actuation of components

The ME-SFI [ME] control unit also acts as the interface (gateway) between the connected CAN bus systems.

Controlling the basic engine functions
- Emission control
- Diagnosis and fault storage
- Injection control
- Electronic accelerator
- Drive authorization system and immobilizer
- Alternator interface
- Regulated camshaft adjustment
- Fuel supply
- Torque interface
- engine timing, start/stop function
- Heat management
- Ignition system
- Cylinder shutoff

Reading in of sensors and signals
Input factuators are read in by means of the following connections:
- Direct line
- Drivetrain LIN (LIN C1)
- Drive train CAN (CAN C)
- Chassis CAN (CAN E)

Evaluation of input factuators
The input factuators that have been read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor and the affected components are then actuated.

Issue of signals and actuation of components
Initial parameter are output over the following connections:
- Direct line
- Drivetrain LIN (LIN C1)
- Drive train CAN (CAN C)
- Chassis CAN (CAN E)

The front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) is the central interface (Gateway) for exchange of function-relevant data for control units which are connected to the various Control Area Network (CAN) bus systems.

Input factuators and initial parameters for the following components are read in or output over direct lines by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit and are needed by the engine timing:

Input factuators and initial parameters for the following components and control units are transmitted or received over the LIN or CAN by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit and are required by the engine timing:

Design
The housing of the ME-SFI [ME] control unit is made out of diecast aluminum and the cover is made out of corrosion-proof sheet steel. The ME-SFI [ME] control unit is protected against water and dusts.
The housing contains the 32-bit measuring and control electronics for the engine timing.

Power supply
The ME-SFI [ME] control unit is "circuit 30 fused" and also supplied with a voltage for ignition ON by "circuit 87 M4".
In the operating voltage range it has both short-circuit protection
Power is supplied through several pins connected in parallel to relieve the electrical connectors.

Ground connection
The "circuit 31" ground connection is made via multiple ground lines to the right assembly compartment ground point (W16/4).

No-load current shutoff
Information for partial function "no-load current shutoff" is documented in the function description "Energy management engine OFF function".

Variants
The engine timing variants (e.g. national and exhaust variants) are activated with Xentry Diagnostics using the variant coding function. Replacement of the ME-SFI [ME] control unit is not necessary.
