Recall - Stop Lamp Switch Non-Compliance

2013 OUTLANDER SPORT STOP LAMP SWITCH - NON-COMPLIANCE RECALL CAMPAIGN

PURPOSE

Due to an inappropriate setting of the brake stop lamp plunger stroke gap during the assembly process the brake stop lamps on certain 2013 Outlander Sports may illuminate continuously or intermittently and the shift lever could be moved out of Park without depressing the brake pedal.

This campaign bulletin provides dealers with instructions to set the brake stop lamp plunger stroke gap to the appropriate setting by adjusting the stop light switch installation.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

Certain 2013 Outlander Sport vehicles built between June 11, 2012 - September 11, 2012

IMPORTANT

Affected new or used inventory vehicles must be repaired before the vehicle is sold or delivered Dealers must check their inventory vehicles, VINs on the Warranty Super Screen to verify whether the vehicle is involved in this recall campaign. It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or deliver a new motor vehicle or any new or used Item of motor vehicle equipment (including a tire) covered by the notification under a sale or lease until the noncompliance is remedied

REQUIRED OPERATIONS








Before starting this campaign procedure CHECK THE WARRANTY SUPERSCREEN to verify if the vehicle is an affected VIN for this campaign and this campaign procedure has not already been completed.

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT

The following equipment is needed to erase DTC's from the ECU:

^ VCI (Vehicle Communication Interface) - MB991824.
^ MEDIC Laptop computer with A/C power adapter - 520924 or 547708.
^ MUT-III main harness 'A' (blue connector at the DLC end) - MB991910.
^ USB 2.0 cable - MB991827.

STOP LAMP SWITCH REPAIR PROCEDURE

Follow these steps to properly adjust the brake stop lamp switch gap setting.





1. With the vehicle parked and the ignition switch in the "OFF" position, set the parking brake. Locate the stop lamp switch.





2. Pull up on the brake pedal and hold it against its stop.

3. Remove the stop lamp switch by rotating it counterclockwise approximately 1/8 of a turn and remove it from its orange retaining clip.

4. While holding the brake pedal in the full up position, reinsert the stop lamp switch into the orange retaining clip until it bottoms against the brake pedal stopper. Do not apply excessive force.





5. Rotate the switch clockwise approximately 1/8 of a turn to lock it in place.

6. Confirm the stop lights light when the brake pedal is depressed and are off when the brake pedal is released.

7. Confirm the shift lever cannot be shifted from P with the brake pedal released and can be shifted from P with the brake pedal depressed.

Erase DTCs from all ECUs.





1. Connect the MUT-III STV as follows:

^ Turn the laptop computer on.
^ Connect the USB cable to the VCI.
^ When the laptop displays the MUT-III main screen, connect the USB cable to the laptop.
^ Connect the MUT-III main harness with the blue DLC connection to the VCI.
^ Connect the blue connector of the MUT-III main harness to the vehicle's data link connector.

2. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.

NOTE:
Ensure all accessories are off (e.g. lights, heating and AC system, audio/navi unit, etc...).

3. From the MEDIC main page,

a. Click on MUT-III
b. Select "Special Function."
c. Select "All DTCs."
d. Select "Erase and read all DTCs."

4. If DTCs return, diagnose and repair using the service manual.
