SERVICE INFORMATION
When servicing the Precis rear brakes or adjusting the parking brake, be aware that each system may affect the operation of the other. For example, adjusting the parking brake cables too tight may impair the proper operation of the automatic rear brake adjuster. Conversely, if the rear brake shoes are not correctly adjusted during installation, as specified in the Precis Service Manual, it may not be possible to adjust the parking brake properly.
The adjustment procedure below should be followed any time the rear brake shoes or parking brake cables are adjusted.
FIGURE 1:
REAR BRAKE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE
NOTE: The following adjustment procedures must be performed on BOTH rear brakes.
1. Release the parking brake lever.
2. Raise the vehicle and remove the rear brake drums.
3. Measure the outside diameter of the rear brake shoes using a brake caliper (Figure 1).
Shoe Outside Diameter: A = 7.0 - 7.1 in. (179.3 mm - 179.6 mm)
FIGURE 2:
4. Adjust the rear brake outside diameter if necessary to within about 1 mm of the drum diameter by depressing the automatic adjuster lever and turn the star wheel until the proper outside diameter is attained (Figure 2).
5. Reinstall the brake drums using the procedure in the Service Manual.
6. Reinstall the wheels and lower the vehicle.
FIGURE 3:
7. Check the adjustment of the parking brake. Using a spring scale or pull gauge, count the number of clicks it takes to reach a resistance of 44 lbs. (20 kg). 5 - 7 clicks is the standard value required (Figure 3).
FIGURE 4:
8. Adjust the parking brake cables to attain the proper number of clicks (Figure 4).
NOTE: It is critical that the parking brake lever be properly adjusted. Excess free play may cause the parking brake to not operate properly.
If there is not enough free play in the lever, the automatic adjuster may not operate.
FIGURE 5:
9. Adjust the rear brake shoe clearance by alternately pulling and releasing the parking brake lever, and then depressing and releasing the brake pedal (Figure 5).
NOTE: It may be necessary to readjust the parking brake cables after this step. Make sure the 5 - 7 click specification is maintained, and adjust the cables again as necessary.
