Cooling System - Hot Weather Package

87mitsubishi04

SUBJECT:
PRECIS HOT WEATHER COOLING PACKAGE FOR MANUAL TRANSAXLE VEHICLES
NO. STB-87-07-004

DATE December, 1987

MODEL 1987-1988 Precis
PURPOSE

Some 1987-1988 Precis vehicles equipped with a manual transaxle (M/T) and air conditioning (A/C) may exhibit abnormally high coolant temperatures under severe operating conditions (heavy traffic, mountain roads, extensive idling) when the ambient (outside) air temperature is above 100~F. This bulletin contains Parts Information and Corrective Procedures for vehicles which exhibit this condition.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

All manual transaxle vehicles equipped with air conditioning and built within the following production date ranges are affected:

MODEL YEAR PRODUCTION DATE RANGE

1987 All 1987 Models

1988 7/1/87 through 10/31/87

NOTE: Not all affected vehicles will exhibit this overheat condition. The new parts should be installed on a case-by-case basis only on vehicles which have experienced the overheat condition.

PARTS INFORMATION
CORRECTIVE PROCEDURE

Before replacing any parts, check the following items and repair as necessary.

^ Thermostat and Radiator Cap
^ Drive Belt Tension (Water Pump)
^ Water Pump (Visual Inspection - Audible Noise)
^ Temperature Gauge, and Sending Unit
^ Electric Fan Operation
^ Thermo Switch in Radiator
^ Coolant Level
^ Obstruction on Condenser or Radiator Surface
^ Cylinder Head Bolt Torque

If the above items are found to be O.K.. use the following procedure to correct the overheat condition.

PERFORM PROCEDURE A FOR 1987 VEHICLES AND PROCEDURE B FOR 1988 VEHICLES BUILT BETWEEN 7/1/87 AND 10/31/87.

PROCEDURE A - 1987 VEHICLES ONLY

NOTE: Before replacing any parts, remove the new front transverse filler assembly from its package and have it painted the same body color of the vehicle to be repaired. Use a chip resistant paint.

1. Record the preset radio stations and then disconnect the battery ground cable.

2. Loosen the radiator drain plug and drain the coolant from the radiator.

3. Remove the radiator grille.

4. Remove the front parking lamps. They are spring mounted.

5. Remove the old front transverse filler assembly from the vehicle and discard (Figure 1).

7. Remove the fan/motor assembly (blower assembly) from the radiator and vehicle. The four bolts/nuts will be reused when installlng the new fan/motor assembly (Figure 3).

8. Remove the thermo switch from the radiator (Figure 3).
9. Install the new thermo switch to the new radiator.

10. Install the new fan and motor assembly (blower assembly) to the radiator using the four bolts removed in step 7.

11. Connect the thermo switch connector and fan motor connector.

12. Carefully install the the newly painted front filler assembly.

13. Install the parking lamps and radiator grille.

FIGURE 4:

14. Install the air guide to the top edge of the grille assembly using the four new clips. Fasten the rear edge of the air guide with existing screws at the locations shown in Figure 4.

15. Connect the battery ground cable and set the radio stations as noted in step 1. Reset the clock to the current time.
COOLANT REFILL PROCEDURE

16. Fill the radiator and reserve tank with clean recommended coolant mixture (50% coolant and 50% water)

Recommended Coolant Use a high quality ethylene-glycol coolant that is compatible with aluminum engine parts. Do not add any corrosion inhibitors or additives to the radiator.

Some Approved Coolant Brands
Prestone Advanced Formula NAPA
Prestone II Winter/Summer BASF 340-2
Texaco JC-86 Shellzone All-Season

17. Run the engine until the coolant has warmed up enough so that the thermostat valve opens. Then stop the engine.

18. Remove the radiator cap and add the coolant mixture until it reaches the filler neck.

19. Make sure that there is no leakage from the radiator or hose connections.

FIGURE 5:

PROCEDURE B - 1988 VEHICLES ONLY

1. Disconnect the fan motor harness connector (Figure 5).

FIGURE 6:

2. Remove the fan/motor assembly (blower assembly) from the radiator and vehicle. The four bolts will be reused when installing the new blower assembly (Figure 6).

3. Install the new fan/motor assembly (blower assembly) to the radiator using the four bolts removed in step 2.
