FIGURE 1:

DRIVE BELT TENSION CHECK PROCEDURE

1) If available, use a belt tension gauge (Figure 1) to check drive belt tension.

FIGURE 2:

2) Install the gauge on the belt at the location shown in Figure 2 and check to see if belt tension is within the specification of 35-50 kg (76-110 lbs.).

FIGURE 3:

3) If a belt tension gauge is not available, check the belt tension by measuring the deflection of the belt between the alternator and water pump pulley (Figure 3). The new specification for belt deflection is 7 - 8.2 mm (0.28 - 0.32 in.).

A. Depress the drive belt midway between the water pump pulley and the alternator pulley with a force of 100 N (22 lbs.) (Figure 3).
B. Measure the belt deflection while depressing the belt.

SERVICE MANUAL CHANGES

Revise the drive belt deflection specification in the 1988 Precis Service Manual from 7 - 9 mm (0.28-0.35 in.) to 7 - 8.2 mm (0.28 - 0.32 in.) as shown below.
