Valve Stem Inspection
WARNING:Be aware of high coolant temperature and pressure. Do not allow the hot coolant to splash. Hot coolant may cause burns.
1. Slowly and carefully remove the radiator pressure cap and drain the engine coolant using the radiator drain plug.
Note:
Save old coolant for reinstallation. If necessary, dispose or recycle any used coolant in accordance with all Federal, State, and local requirements/regulations.
2. Remove the mounting bolt securing the valve stem control lever.
Note:
This bolt may have thread sealant which may make it hard to remove. Use a properly fitting cross-bladed (+) screwdriver.
3. Detach the valve stem control lever from the valve stem pin. Set the control lever aside.
4. Remove the 4 screws (underside of valve stem capsule) securing the support body to the heater core.
5. CAUTION:
Before removing the valve stem, be sure to place a vinyl bag under it. Remaining coolant in the heater core will drain out when the stem is removed and can contaminate the carpet. Also, have some shop towels available to wipe up any spillage if necessary.
Remove the valve stem from the heater core.
6. Carefully clean the valve stem.
Identify which type of valve was removed from the vehicle.
^ If the "Mando" valve was removed from the heater core with a silver, white or tin colored bracket, install the "DKK" heater valve stem.
^ If the "DKK" valve was removed from the heater core with a silver, white or tin colored bracket, the "DKK" valve stem is correct. Re-install the "DKK" valve.
7. Reinstall the support body and control lever.
8. Reinstall the original coolant. Use fresh coolant to "top-off" the system.
9. Pressure test the cooling system for leaks.
10. Carefully inspect the new valve stem area for leakage.
11. Reinstall the protector (passenger side) cover.
