DATE August, 1988
MODEL 1988 Precis
FIGURE 1:
KEY CODE CORRECTION The metal tag attached to the ignition key of a new Precis contains a five-digit code beginning with "X" and four numeric digits as illustrated in Figure 1. This code can be used by a dealer or locksmith to duplicate the key.
Dealer files also contain a key code number that allows a key to be made in the event the original key is lost. The number should be identical to the one on the key tag. Unfortunately, it is not. The number in the dealer file begins with an "O" as shown in the table below.
Number on Key Tag Number in Dealer File
X0387 O0387
The four numeric digits are the same as on the key tag. If this "O" number is given to a locksmith, the wrong key is cut. It will not fit the lock. If, however, the letter "X" is substituted for the "O", the resulting key will match the original key.
The manufacturer is aware of this situation, and steps are being taken to correct the discrepancy. Until it can be cleared up, please remember to disregard the "O" and substitute an "X" to avoid unnecessary expense and inconvenience to your customers when duplicating Precis keys using the code number. As a suggestion: post a notice or a copy of this bulletin with the key cutting equipment as a reminder!
