Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Purpose

Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. is voluntarily recalling all 1987-89 Precis vehicles to replace the reed valve located in the air control valve assembly. Failure of the reed valve may allow hot exhaust gasses to enter the secondary air filter hose and can possibly melt components, leading to an engine compartment fire. Refer to the illustration below for the location of the air control valve, reed valve, and secondary air filter hose and case.

To eliminate reed valve failure, replacement valves are made from a durable, stainless-steel material.

The remainder of this bulletin provides affected vehicle and parts information, plus warranty and replacement procedures for the reed valve, and, if necessary, the air control valve. If the exhaust gasses have damaged the secondary air filter hose, case, and filter, they must also be replaced.
