Valve Stem Inspection/Replacement
VALVE STEM INSPECTION1. Remove the protector cover (passenger side) to expose the heater core.
2. To identify if the heater valve stem applies to this recall, look at the heater valve bracket. The heater valve bracket secures the heater valve stem to the heater core using four small screws.
Heater valves with a yellow or brass colored bracket require the recall repairs. Heater valves with silver, white, or tin colored brackets DO NOT apply to this recall.
If you find a silver, white, or tin colored bracket on a heater core, please file a claim for inspection only. A sample Inspection Only Claim is shown on page 7.
VALVE STEM REPLACEMENT
WARNING:
Be aware of high coolant temperature and pressure. Do not allow the hot coolant to splash. Hot coolant will cause burns.
1. Slowly and carefully remove the radiator pressure cap and drain the engine coolant using the radiator drain plug.
Note:
Save old coolant for reinstallation. If necessary, dispose or recycle any used coolant in accordance with all Federal, State, and local requirements/regulations.
2. Remove the mounting bolt holding the valve stem control lever.
Note:
This bolt may have thread sealant which may make it hard to remove. Use a properly fitting cross-bladed (+) screwdriver.
3. Detach the valve stem control lever from the valve stem pin. Set the control lever aside.
4. Remove the 4 screws (underside of valve stem capsule) holding the support body to the heater core.
5. CAUTION: Before removing the valve stem, be sure to place a vinyl bag under it. Remaining coolant in the heater core will drain out when the stem is removed and can contaminate the carpet. Also, have some shop towels available to wipe up any spillage if necessary.
Remove the valve stem from the heater core.
6. Carefully clean the valve stem capsule. Replace the valve stem (Fig. 1) with a new one.
The correct valve stem has a one-piece seal approximately 17 mm in diameter.
Do not replace valve (Fig. 2) as part of the recall.
7. Reinstall the support body and control lever.
8. Reinstall the original coolant. Use fresh coolant to "top-off' the system.
9. Pressure test the cooling system for leaks.
10. Carefully inspect the new valve stem area for leakage.
11. Reinstall the protector (passenger side) cover.
