PRECIS STEERING GEAR INSTALLATION

PURPOSE
If the steering rack on a Precis is removed and replaced, additional steps should be followed to assure that the steering column assembly is properly reattached to the rack. The additional steps outlined below will allow you to properly position and tighten the upper and lower U-joint couplings. As a reference to this bulletin, write "SEE TSB 88-19-004 FOR ADDITIONAL STEPS" as shown on pages 56-31 and 56-50 in both the 1988 and 1989 Precis Service Manuals, and page 560-22 in the 1987 Precis Service Manual. In the 1989 Precis Service Manual, also add reference to this bulletin in the TSB Revision box at the bottom of the indicated pages.

DESCRIPTION OF U-JOINT ASSEMBLY
The steering rack pinion shaft has been machined to allow no adjustment when assembled to the lower U-joint coupling. The steering column shaft, however, has been machined with extra clearance to allow adjustment when assembled to the upper U-joint coupling. Because of the lower U-joint's lack of adjustment, it should be assembled first, followed by the upper U-joint coupling.
ADDITIONAL STEPS
1. Completely remove the upper U-joint pinch bolt. This allows the lower end of the U-joint shaft to move freely.
2. (a) Center the rack assembly, and (b) position the lower U-joint coupling on the rack pinion shaft. Install the lower U-joint pinch bolt, washer and nut. Torque to 15-20 Nm (11-14 ft-lbs).
NOTE:
The pinch bolt should pass through the coupling with little resistance. Move the coupling up and down until the pinch bolt passes through the coupling smoothly.
3. With the rack assembly still centered, center the steering wheel and position the upper U-joint coupling on the column shaft. Install the upper U-joint pinch bolt, washer, and nut. Torque to 15-20 Nm (11-14 ft-lbs).
