Hard Start/No Start Condition - Cold/Hot

NO.: TSB-91-54-010
DATE: November, 1991
MODEL: 1990 Eclipse

SUBJECT:
HOT RESTART/NO START CONDITION

PURPOSE
This Technical Service Bulletin describes the installation of a modulator kit to correct a hot restart/no start condition on some 1990 Eclipses.

AFFECTED MODELS
1990 Eclipse equipped with 2.0L engine and turbo-charger. Both 2WD and AWD models may be affected.

DESCRIPTION
In cool climates where winter-grade fuels are used, some 1990 2.0L turbo-charged Eclipses may be hard to start in the morning or when hot. This condition can occur in late winter or spring.

To correct this condition, it is necessary to install a modulator kit to the vehicle's MPI electronic control unit. The modulator splices between the ECU and the ECU wiring harness.

The remainder of this bulletin describes parts information and installation instructions for the modulator kit.

PARTS INFORMATION
The part number for the modulator kit is MD175156. The kit is available through your local PDC. Please refer to the illustration in this bulletin for a component description of the modulator kit.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. Record all radio preset stations.

2. On vehicles equipped with an automatic transaxle, set the parking brake and place the gear selection lever in Neutral. This will provide the clearance needed for component removal.

3. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

4. Remove the left and right side console panels. The left side is attached by two screws and the right side is attached with three screws.

5. Remove the front screw of the right rear console side panel. Pivot the panel to the right to expose the ECU.

6. Remove the bezel surrounding the audio system by carefully prying up the four retaining clips on each corner.

7. Remove the four screws holding the audio system to the dashboard. Remove the audio system, detaching the wiring and antenna connections located at the rear.

8. If so equipped, remove the radio amplifier from inside the center console area. Four screws hold the amplifier in position. Slide the amplifier out through the left side opening of the console.

9. Remove the three screws holding the ECU in position and detach the wiring harness connectors. Remove the ECU from the opening at the right side of the console.

10. Connect the three-plug side of the modulator extension harness into the ECU connector points. Connect the other end of the modulator extension harness into the modulator adaptor, leaving the lone pig-tail harness unattached.

11. Attach the modulator adaptor and extension harness to the ECU using the tie wrap provided in the modulator kit.

12. Install the ECU assembly (ECU, extension harness, and modulator adaptor) in the original ECU position by inserting it through the opening of the audio system. Secure the ECU assembly using the three original screws.

13. Attach the vehicle's ECU harness connectors to the connection points of the modulator adaptor.

14. Attach the modulator bracket to the upper brackets of the amplifier using the existing amplifier bracket screws. If needed, use the screw and nut supplied with the modulator kit to secure the modulator bracket.

15. Plug the extension harness pigtail connector into the modulator.

16. Reassemble in reverse order, beginning with Step # 8.

17. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and verify the correct functioning of the audio system.

18. Reset the radio preset stations and the digital clock.
