PURPOSE
This bulletin is issued to announce an improved auto-tensioner, newly developed to reduce engine start-up noise caused by insufficient timing belt tension in early 1990 Galant, Eclipse and Mirage cars equipped with DOHC engine.

1990 Galant with 2.0L DOHC Engine 1990 Eclipse with 2.0L DOHC Engine 1990 Mirage with 1.6L DOHC Engine
EFFECTIVE DATE
The new tensioner entered production on January 22, 1990 (Engine # JW9409)

DESCRIPTION
If you should encounter a loose timing belt on a DOHC Galant or Eclipse or Mirage built before January, 1990. Check the auto-tensioner as described in the Service Manual. If it is malfunctioning, replace it with the new auto-tensioner. The chart below shows the changes to the 4G6 series DOHC auto-tensioner. Note that the overall length of the new part is 9 mm longer than the old one.
