SUBJECT:
END CLUTCH PISTON INSTALLATION

PURPOSE

When reassembling the end clutch on 4 speed automatic transaxles, it is important that the piston be installed squarely into the end clutch retainer. Pressing the clutch assembly together by hand may damage the oil seals (D-Rings) causing oil pressure leakage and premature wear of the clutches. This bulletin provides procedures that use special tool MD998375-01 (Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Installer) allowing the piston to be pressed squarely into the front end clutch retainer with the aid of a hydraulic press.

Figure 1:

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

CAUTION: Do not use a hammer to install the end clutch piston into the retainer.

1. Install the oil seals (D-rings) in the piston inner and outer grooves (Figure 1).

2. Apply a coating of automatic transaxle fluid to the outer edges of the oil seals.

Figure 2:

3. Carefully position the piston squarely on the end clutch retainer (Figure 2).

Figure 3:

4. Center special tool MD998375-01 over the piston (Figure 3).

Figure 4:

5. Place the end clutch in a hydraulic press (Figure 4).

6. Slowly press the end clutch piston into the end clutch retainer.

NOTE: Pressure must be applied evenly across the surface of the piston. Do not over-press the piston into the retainer.
