M/T - Hard Downshift into 4th Gear

MODEL 1990 Precis
PURPOSE

If you encounter a 1990 Precis equipped with a 5-speed manual transaxle that will not downshift into 4th gear or is difficult to shift into reverse gear, it may be necessary to check the restriction ball assembly.

DESCRIPTION

The restriction ball assembly supports the reverse shift lug in fts proper position. See Figure 1. If the steel ball in the restriction ball assembly is stuck in the bolt, this allows the reverse shift lug to rotate and jam on the 3rd and 4th shift rail.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Under the hood, locate and remove the restriction ball assembly on top of the transaxle case, a 19 mm bolt. See Figure 2.

2. Check that the restriction ball operates properly. The steel ball should move back and forth against the force of the spring. See Figure 3.

3. If the steel ball is stuck in the bolt, the assembly should be replaced with a new one, part number 43846-34000.
