Removal of Converter For Inspection
1. Apply penetrating oil on the converter nut's threads. Remove the catalytic converter.WARNING:
The catalytic converter should be cool before removing it from the vehicle.
2. Inspect the converter for damage.
^ If any damage is found, replace the catalytic converter, gaskets, and nuts.
^ If no damage is found, reinstall the original catalytic converter with new gaskets and nuts.
Damage is defined as:
A. A rattling noise from inside the catalytic converter while shaking.
B. A crack in the catalyst material (honeycomb) - a flashlight must be used to view inside the converter for this inspection.
C. If the mat (the mesh surrounding the catalytic material) cannot be seen when shining a flashlight on it.
D. If light cannot be seen when looking through the catalytic converter (converter is plugged).
3. After the catalytic converter is on the vehicle, lower the vehicle and start it. Check for any exhaust leaks that may come from the catalytic converter.
