1990 PRECIS FRONT AXLE HUB LOCK
WASHER SAFETY RECALL


PURPOSE

Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America is recalling certain 1990 Precis vehicles for front axle hub lock washer replacement. The lock washer located under the front axle nut may crack. If this occurs a noise may be heard from the front wheel area. If this warning is not heeded and a wheel bearing fails, that wheel could seize and possibly cause an accident. This bulletin describes the necessary repair procedures to correct this condition.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

Vehicles affected by this bulletin are certain 1990 Precis models built during January and February, 1990.

There are a small number of affected vehicles. Those dealers who, according to MMSA records, have purchased any of the affected vehicles have been provided with a list containing the VIN numbers of these vehicles. This list is enclosed with each of the affected dealers' copies of this bulletin.

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

MMSA has sent an owner notification letter to all customers who have purchased any of the vehicles listed that have not been repaired. A sample of this letter is included in this recall bulletin. However, in the interest of safety and due to the small number of vehicles involved, MMSA also urges all dealers to contact those customers who have purchased any of the listed vehicles and request that they bring their vehicles in for service immediately. A warranty claim must be prepared for each vehicle repaired. MMSA will monitor completed claims and follow up with dealers to insure that all vehicles are repaired.

PARTS INFORMATION





All parts needed to repair the vehicles on the list are enclosed with the dealer's copy of this bulletin. Two lockwashers and two cotter pins are needed for each car (one for each side). These parts are shown in Figure 1.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

Reimbursement for performing the lock washer replacement must be claimed by submitting a Recall Claim type "C", menu option "E-5", on your Diamond Network System. DO NOT SUBMIT AS "W" CLAIMS.

The "O" in the above labor code is the number ZERO.
