Replacement Procedure

NOTE:
The procedures specified do not require lifting of the vehicle.

1. Turn wheels straight ahead and set parking brake.

2. Remove hub cap or wheel cover.

3. Remove and discard the cotter pin.

4. Remove axle hub nut.

5. Remove and discard the old lock washer. From the parts kit install the new lock washer.

CAUTION:
The chamfer on the edge of the lock washer must be facing out as shown in Figure 2.

6. Reinstall the front axle hub nut and torque to 196 N-m (145 ft.lbs). If the position of the holes in the front axle hub nut do not line up the holes in the drive shaft, tighten the nut slightly until the holes line up as shown in Figure 3.

CAUTION:
Do not exceed 255 N-m (188 ft.lbs.)

7. Install the cotter pin and bend the ends around the front axle hub nut like the original cotter pin.

CAUTION:
Do not reuse the old cotter pin.

8. Replace the hub cap or wheel cover.

9. Repeat steps 2 to 8 for the other side.

10. After the lock washers on both sides have been replaced, open the hood and place a punch mark over the first character on the underhood vehicle identification plate as shown. This will indicate that recall procedures have been completed (Figure 4).
