The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) is designed to supplement the drivers seat belt to help reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver by activating and deploying a drivers's side airbag in certain frontal collisions.
The SRS consists of left and right front impact sensors, an airbag, SRS diagnosis unit, a safing impact sensor, a SRS warning light, a clock spring interconnection and a knee bolster, Figs. 7 through 9.
The SRS is designed so that the airbag will deploy when the safing sensor plus either or both front impact sensors simultaneously activate while the ignition switch is in the On position. This is designed to occur in frontal or near-frontal impacts of moderate to severe force.
