SUBJECT:
SRS PRE-DIAGNOSIS REQUIREMENTS
PURPOSE
This Technical Service Bulletin describes the importance of having a fully charged battery and a properly functioning charging system before diagnosing any conditions affecting the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS).
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1992 Diamante and 1991-92 3000GT
DESCRIPTION
When preparing to diagnose conditions affecting the SRS, it is important to ensure the vehicle has a fully charged battery and a properly functioning charging system. A low battery can cause the SRS warning light to turn on. In addition, false condition codes may be retrieved by the Multi-Use Tester (MUT) when the vehicle's charging system is not functioning normally. (The false condition codes may include numbers 31, 43, 44, or 45.)
If a vehicle comes to your shop with the SRS warning light illuminated, perform the following steps before attempting SRS diagnosis and/or component replacement.
1. Perform a load test on the battery to determine its state of charge. If necessary, recharge the battery to a fully charged condition.
2. Conduct a complete charging system test using a Sun VAT-60 or equivalent. If any abnormal charging system conditions are found, correct them before proceeding.
3. Use the MUT to erase any previously stored condition codes.
Performing these three steps will ensure accurate readings from the MUT, as well as accurate replacement of SRS components requiring replacement.
