TRANSAXLE AND TRANSFER
ASSEMBLY IDENTIFICATION
Note:
This TSB replaces ATIN # 92-22-001, dated January 30, 1992.
PURPOSE
This Technical Service Bulletin describes how to identify both the new design and previous design of the Getrag transaxle and transfer assembly. Proper identification is necessary since the new components are not interchangeable with the previous components.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1991 and 1992 3000GT VR-4
DESCRIPTION
The new style Getrag transaxle uses an increased diameter connecting shaft to the transfer assembly, along with an increased inner diameter to the drive bevel gear. Because of this, the new transfer assembly cannot be installed on the former transaxle, and the former transfer assembly cannot be installed on the new transaxle. Vehicles beginning with VIN JA3XE74C*NY042725 contain the new transaxle and transfer assembly.
NOTE:
Since there may be a few late model transaxle and transfer assemblies installed prior to the above VIN, make sure to locate and identify both transaxle and transfer assembly identification codes before replacement procedures are performed.
The transaxle and transfer assembly style are identified by the first digit of the identification code found on each unit. For example, if the code number AAG-0288 is shown on the transaxle, the first digit, or "A", is the identifier.
Refer to the following information:

NEW B N
FORMER A M
On vehicles requiring transaxle and/or transfer assembly replacement, you must ensure the correct transaxle/transfer assembly combination, either B/N or A/M, is installed.
