Installation Procedure
1. Place the transaxle in Neutral and set the parking brake.
2. Disconnect the two turbocharger intercooler hoses and the air cleaner duct located above the shift cable control lever assembly.
3. Remove the shift cable ends from the shift control levers.
4. Remove the upper shift lever from the transaxle, making sure not to misplace the small plastic aligning block.
5. Remove the two bolts holding the shift cable control lever assembly. Carefully work the control lever assembly loose from its mounting point on the transaxle case.
6. Remove the control lever assembly from the transaxle case. If the spring on the end of the control lever's shaft remains inside the transaxle, use a magnetic screwdriver to retrieve it.
7. Inspect the removed control lever assembly. Make sure the reverse lockout mechanism and attaching bolt are still in place. If they are not, the transaxle assembly must be replaced. Refer to Section 22 of the service manual for removal and installation instructions.
If the reverse lockout mechanism and attaching bolt are still present on the control lever assembly, continue with Step 8.
8. Discard the shift cable control lever assembly and its two assembly bolts.
9. Apply adhesive sealer (Three-Bond 1216 or equivalent) on the flange of the new control lever assembly. Install the new control lever assembly into the mounting point on the transaxle case, making sure to align the flange as shown in the diagram. Tighten the new assembly bolts 10 N-m (7.3 ft.lbs.).
10. Install the upper shift control lever and the plastic aligning block. Tighten the bolts of the upper shift control lever 18 N-m (13 ft.lbs.).
11. Install the shift cable ends on the shift control levers, using new cotter pins.
12. Reconnect the two turbocharger intercooler hoses and the air cleaner duct located above the shift cable control lever assembly.
13. Inside the vehicle, check for correct operation of the shifter mechanism. If the shifter binds or does not function normally, perform the shift cable adjustment procedure shown in Section 23 of the 1991 or 1992 3000GT service manual.
