Steering - Squeak When Wheel Is Turned

STEERING SQUEAK
PURPOSE
If a squeak is heard when the steering wheel of a 3000GT is turned, it may be caused by lack of lubrication between the steering shaft and the bearing where the shaft passes through the cover assembly located on the forward bulkhead. This bulletin provides repair procedures for this condition.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. From inside the vehicle, loosen the 4 bolts securing the cover assembly to the forward bulkhead (Figure 1).

2. Center the bearing (contained within the cover assembly) to the steering shaft. Tighten the bolts (Figure 2).

3. Press the bearing down and spray Mitsubishi Silicone spray (part number A999ZC1X04) or equivalent (Figure 3a) between steering shaft and bearing (Figure 3b).
4. Release the bearing making sure that the bearing returns to the normal position. You may need to pull the bearing up.
