Instruments - Speedometer Readings Higher Than Actual
NO.: TSB-93-22-002DATE: August, 1993
MODEL: 1991-93 3000GT VR-4
SUBJECT:
AVAILABILITY OF NEW SPEEDOMETER DRIVEN GEAR
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
On some 1991-93 3000GT VR-4s, customers may complain that the speed indicated on their speedometer is slightly higher than actual vehicle speed. This bulletin explains how to verify the condition and how to correct it by installing a new speedometer driven gear.
NOTE:
3000GT VR-4s built from 02/01/93 are already equipped with the new speedometer driven gear. These vehicles do not require corrective action.
VEHICLES AFFECTED
1991-93 3000GT VR-4 (Except as noted above.)
VERIFICATION
If a customer complains of speedometer readings slightly higher than actual vehicle speed, conduct the following test to measure speedometer accuracy.
1. Drive the vehicle over a measured one-mile distance and record the odometer reading.
2. If the odometer reading is within +/- 4% of the actual distance traveled, no corrective action is necessary. A reading within +/- 4% is the SAE Standard for speedometer accuracy.
3. If the odometer reading is over +/- 4% of the actual distance traveled, replace the speedometer driven gear as outlined in the following procedure.
REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE FOR SPEEDOMETER DRIVEN GEAR
WARNING:
Observe standard shop safety practices while performing this procedure.
1. Record all radio station pre-sets.
2. Remove the battery hold-down, battery shield, and battery from the vehicle.
Between the engine and bulkhead, the speedometer gear should be visible on the transaxle.
3. Detach the speedometer wiring harness from the speedometer gear.
4. Remove the speedometer sleeve bolt and pull the gear/sleeve assembly from its opening in the transaxle.
5. Disassemble the speedometer gear/sleeve by using a punch to remove the spring pin.
Except for the driven gear, retain all pieces of the speedometer gear/sleeve for re-assembly.
6. Reassemble the speedometer gear/sleeve using the new driven gear (p/n MR111502). Apply a small amount of gear oil to the driven gear shaft before inserting it into the sleeve.
When installing the spring pin, be sure to position it with its split facing the speedometer sleeve, NOT the shaft of the driven gear.
7. Install the speedometer gear/sleeve assembly, making sure the driven gear meshes correctly with the speedometer drive gear in the transaxle. Tighten the speedometer sleeve bolt 4 N-m (3 ft.lbs.).
8. Attach the speedometer harness to the speedometer gear.
9. Install the battery, battery shield, and battery hold-down.
10. Re-set the radio and the clock.
11. Test drive the vehicle to check for speedometer gear noise. If noise is heard, re-check the gear installation for proper fit and carefully reassemble as needed.
