A/C - Magnetic Clutch Relays Damaged
NO.: TSB-91-55-009DATE: October, 1991
MODEL: 1991, 1992 Eclipse
SUBJECT:
ECLIPSE 1.8L AIR CONDITIONING MAGNETIC CLUTCH/CONDENSER FAN RELAYS
THIS BULLETIN REPLACES ATIN # 91-55-001.
PURPOSE
Air Conditioning kits for Eclipse 1.8L, which were manufactured between 7/8/91 through 8/20/91, may contain two damaged magnetic clutch/condenser fan relays possibly causing the compressor clutch and/or condenser fan not to operate.
This bulletin describes:
1. The proper procedure which should be taken before installing an affected A/C kit.
2. Identifies the relays for A/C equipped vehicles which may have an inoperative magnetic clutch and/or condenser fan to avoid extensive diagnostic procedures from being performed.
PARTS INFORMATION
Affected A/C installation kit: MB849577
Affected relay identification number: 056700-5260
Replacement relay: MB084670
PRE-INSTALLATION KIT IDENTIFICATION
1. Before installation, check the shipping box for the date of manufacture (Figure 1). If a kit was manufactured between 7/8/91 through 8/20/91 and has a green dot affixed to the shipping box, no action is required.
NOTE:
Air Conditioning kits ordered from facing PDCs after 8-28-91 have been inspected, suspect relays TESTED and/or replaced and a green dot affixed to the shipping box.
2. If you have a kit in stock with the date on the shipping box falling between 7/8/91 through 8/20/91, which DOES NOT have a green dot affixed to the shipping box, the following steps must be taken before installing.
A. Open the A/C installation kit and remove the relay box from its packing box numbered DS-402.
B. Remove the relay box cover. Remove both round relays from the relay box (Figure 2).
C. Read the production date code on the relay(s) as shown in Figure 3. The code consists of 4 digits (ex. 7LXX or 8LXX, where "XX" is a two digit number). If the production code begins with "7L" or "8L" replace the affected relay(s).
POST-INSTALLATION DIAGNOSIS
If the magnetic clutch and/or condenser fan does not operate on Eclipse vehicles with a dealer installed air conditioning system installed after 7-8-91, it is necessary to check the production code on the control relays before attempting to perform any further diagnostic procedures.
1. Remove the A/C relay box cover.
2. Remove both round relays from the relay box (Figure 2).
3. Read the production date code on the relays as shown in Figure 3. The production code consists of 4 digits (ex. 7LXX or 8LXX, where "XX" is a two digit number). If the production code begins with "7L" or "8L", replace the affected relay(s).
NOTE:
Standard diagnostic procedures apply if the relay(s) are not found to have the affected production code or if relay replacement does not correct the condition.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
1. Relay(s) replaced prior to installation of the A/C system:
Submit a standard warranty claim with the related relay operation number, ZERO labor time, and the affected part number.
2. A/C kits installed after 7-8-91 and prior to ATIN # 91-55-001 (sent by Triple Diamond Electronic Mail on 9-16-91):
Submit a standard warranty claim using the standard relay replacement operation number, warranty time, and the affected part number.
3. A/C kits in stock, no VIN available.
Follow the paper parts warranty claim procedures beginning on page 2-180 of the Warranty Policy and Procedure Manual (WPPM), using the relay replacement labor operation number with a ZERO time allowance.
