SUBJECT:

AUDIO NOISE FROM THE ALTERNATOR

PURPOSE
This bulletin describes the cause and correction of an audio system alternator noise (high-pitched whining) heard on some 1993 Diamantes and 3000GTs equipped with model RX-367 audio system AND rear CD changer.

CAUSE

On some 1993 Diamantes and 3000GTs, an alternator noise (high-pitched whining sound) may be heard from the audio system during Compact Disc (CD) changer operation. The cause of this noise may be an incomplete ground inside the AM/FM receiver/tape player portion of the audio unit. The noise is only present on vehicles equipped with model RX-367 audio system AND rear mounted CD player; it DOES NOT affect RX-367 audio systems WITHOUT CD changer, or vehicles equipped with the model RX-366 audio system.

CORRECTION

To correct the noise on in-stock vehicles, ALL 1993 Diamantes and 3000GTs shipped from the Port Of Entry (POE) BEFORE NOVEMBER 16, 1992 (equipped with RX-367 audio system and CD changer) MUST have the AM/FM receiver/tape player portion of the audio system replaced. Vehicles shipped from the Ports after November 16, 1992, have been corrected before shipment to the dealers. The exchange program for RX-367 audio units will be administered by Mitsubishi Electronics America (MELA).

The remainder of this bulletin describes RX-367 audio system identification, exchange program instructions, and warranty information.

AUDIO SYSTEM IDENTIFICATION

To identity the RX-367 audio system, look at the face of the AM/FM receiver/tape player; the radio station preset buttons are located on the bottom row of the controls. On the RX-366 audio system (also used on some 1993 Diamantes and 3000GTs), the radio station preset buttons are located in the middle row of the controls.

Refer to the illustration.

EXCHANGE PROGRAM INSTRUCTIONS

NOTE:
Each dealership should designate one person (such as the service manager or shop foreman) to oversee the exchange program.

To receive exchange units from MELA, follow these instructions:

1. Identify which in-stock vehicles have the RX-367 audio system with CD changer. Refer to audio system identification shown above.

2. For RX-367 audio systems NOT equipped with a CD changer, it is NOT necessary to replace the AM/FM receiver/tape player portion unless the customer plans to equip their vehicle with the MELA rear mounted CD changer at a later date.

2a. In cases such as these, flip open the tape player door and look inside. Units already exchanged have a black mark on the left side of the cassette holder. Units requiring exchange do not have the black mark. Refer to the illustration.

3. Record each vehicle's VIN. It will be needed to release the exchange units to your dealership.

4. Contact MELA using their toll-free telephone number: 1-800-443-3302. Ask for Gary Sewell or Bob Walling.

5. Provide MELA with the VIN from each affected vehicle. MELA will send you the AM/FM receiver/tape player portion of the audio system for each VIN provided.

6. Upon receiving the exchange units from MELA, remove the old AM/FM receiver/tape player from the vehicle and attach the anti-theft card. (The anti-theft card is located in the glove box.)

7. Return the malfunctioning units using the packing boxes from the exchange units. To ensure that all MMSA dealers receive units in a timely manner, the old units MUST be returned to MELA within 2-3 days of receiving the exchange units.

Send the old units, freight collect*, via Federal Express 2nd-day air, to:

MITSUBISHI ELECTRONICS, AMERICA, INC.
46501 COMMERCE CENTER DRIVE
PLYMOUTH, MI 48170

* MELA pays for all freight charges.

8. Before installing the exchange unit, remove the anti-theft card (attached to the exchange unit) and place the card in the vehicle's glove box.

9. In the interest of customer satisfaction, MMSA recommends you do not sell any 1993 Diamante or 3000GT (shipped from the POE BEFORE NOVEMBER 16, 1992 and equipped with model RX-367 audio system w/CD changer) unless the AM/FM receiver/tape player portion of the audio system has been replaced. Refer to Step 2a to determine if the exchange audio unit has already been installed.

10. If you receive a customer complaint regarding audio system noise, replace the AM/FM receiver/tape player portion of the RX-367 audio system. To exchange the audio unit, follow the same instructions as for in-stock vehicles. After installation, make sure the customer stores the radio anti-theft card in a safe location.

This program will be in effect until further notice.
