Door Window - Inner Weatherstrip Damage
NO.: TSB-94-42B-002DATE: July, 1994
MODEL: 1991-94 3000GT
SUBJECT:
DOOR WINDOW INNER WEATHERSTRIP DAMAGE
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
On some 1991-94 3OOOGTs, the front corner of the door window inner weatherstrip can become raised or torn. The front edge of the weatherstrip has a hard-rubber end piece which may create excessive resistance on the window, causing weatherstrip damage. This condition can affect both driver-side and passenger-side doors on 3OOOGTs produced through 11/30/93.
Vehicles produced from 12/01/93 are equipped with a redesigned weatherstrip. The new weatherstrip does not use a hard-rubber piece on its end. In addition, the new weatherstrip is not coated with felt like the old weatherstrip. The new weatherstrip is more flexible and provides less window sliding resistance than the old weatherstrip.
If a customer complains of door window inner weatherstrip damage on a 3OOOGT produced before 12/01/93, replace the weatherstrip as described in this bulletin.
DESCRIPTION
Use the procedure shown for removing/replacing the door window inner weatherstrip. Do not replace the weatherstrip unless it is raised or torn on its front edge or otherwise damaged.
Obtain the following materials before beginning:
^ 1991 or 1992-94 3OOOGT Service Manual, Volume 1
^ Standard hand tools
^ Sheet metal screws, size 1/2 x 4, three per side
^ Door window inner weatherstrip part number MR153919 (driver-side) or MR153920 (passenger-side)
1. Remove the door trim. It instructions are needed, refer to the 1991 3OOOGT Service Manual (page 42-41), or the 1992-94 3OOOGT Service Manual (page 42-56).
2. Using needle-nose pliers, remove and discard the three staples securing the weatherstrip to the door trim.
3. Loosen the nine weatherstrip retaining clips and remove the weatherstrip from the door panel. Discard the old weatherstrip, along with the retaining clips.
4. Place the new weatherstrip in the same position on the door trim as the old weatherstrip. Be sure all retaining clips are secured and the top metal trim of the weatherstrip is flush with the top side of the door trim.
5. After positioned correctly, drill three small holes through the weatherstrip and door trim using a drill with 1/16" drill bit. Drill each hole in the same area utilized by the old weatherstrip's staples.
6. Install three sheet metal screws, size 1/2 x 4, to secure the weatherstrip to the door trim.
7. Reinstall the door trim and test the operation of the window.
