Body - Roof Rack Fading and Paint Peeling

NO.: TSB-93-51-003

DATE: May, 1993

MODEL: 1999-93 Expo, Expo, LRV, and Montero

SUBJECT:
ROOF RACK FADING AND PAINT PEELING

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

On some 1992-93 Expos, Expo LRVS, and Monteros, the roof rack is subject to fading and paint peeling. In particular, the roof rack plastic end supports fade from black to grey color, and the top coating of black paint on the side rails and cross bars can peel off to the base coat.

Replacement of roof rack component parts is required on any customer vehicle exhibiting the fading or paint peeling condition. Also, each vehicle in stock should be inspected for roof rack fading or paint peeling. If either condition is found on in-stock vehicles, replace the roof rack component parts as outlined in this bulletin.

CAUSE

Fading of the plastic end supports is caused by insufficient UV treatment of the end support material. The side rail/cross bar paint peeling may be caused by insufficient UV protection in the roof rack's paint pigment.

CORRECTION

To correct the condition, it is necessary to install new roof rack end supports, side rails, and cross bars. However, not all vehicles returned for roof rack servicing require replacement of every roof rack component part. Before servicing, inspect the roof rack to ensure only necessary components are replaced. Use the information shown in the following replacement guide.

NOTE:
Each kit comes with a detailed instruction sheet. Read and understand the instructions BEFORE servicing the roof rack.
