Rear Wheel Housing - Water Leak
NO.: TSB-97-42A-008DATE: May, 1997
MODEL: 1997 Eclipse Spyder
Subject:
REAR WHEEL HOUSING WATER LEAK
PURPOSE
This bulletin contains procedures to repair a water leak at the right rear wheel housing.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Symptom
Some affected vehicles may develop a water leak into the trunk area from the right rear wheel housing. This usually occurs during extended driving in rainy or wet weather.
Cause
Water intrusion into the trunk is caused by misaligned sealer beads in two different locations in the right rear wheel housing. One bead is near the front top of the spring house panel where it mates to the the inner quarter panel (1st seam) and the other is at the rear of the right rear wheel house inner panel (2nd seam).
Remedy
The water leak into the trunk is repaired by locating the misaligned sealer beads and resealing these seams with RTV Silicone Sealant.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1997 Eclipse Spyder built before 2/3/97 (before VIN: VE114593)
PROCEDURE
1 Raise the vehicle.
2. Remove the right rear wheel.
3. Look up into the wheel housing toward the rear quarter panel outer.
4. Locate the first seam in the wheel housing. This seam is the joint between the spring house panel and the inner rear quarter panel. If the edge of the spring house panel is visible, apply enough sealant to completely cover the seam to prevent water intrusion.
5. Locate the second seam in the wheel housing area. This seam is the joint between the inner rear wheel house panel and the inner quarter panel. Check to see if the sealant covers the entire seam. You may need to use a mirror to effectively inspect this seam. If the sealant does not entirely bridge the seam, apply sufficient sealer to prevent water intrusion.
6. Let the sealant cure for 30 minutes.
7. Water test the re-sealed seams before returning the vehicle to the customer.
