PCM - MIL ON DTC 118 Fuel System Rich

No: TSB-98-13-003
DATE: May, 1998
MODEL: 1998 Eclipse M/T

SUBJECT:
FALSE DTC 118/POOR DRIVEABILITY (M/T)

PURPOSE

On some affected vehicles, excessive purge vapors may cause one or more of the following conditions to occur. Reprogramming the powertrain control module (PCM) with the reprogramming cartridge MIT992013 will change certain engine calibrations to eliminate these conditions.

^ Vehicle fails emission test due to excessive purge flow.
^ In hot spring/summer or abnormally warm winter ambient temperatures, the CHECK ENGINE light comes on and a false Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 118 (P0172), "Fuel System Rich" is set.
^ In hot spring/summer or abnormally warm winter ambient temperatures, vehicle experiences hesitation and/or stumble.
^ After refueling in hot spring/summer or abnormally warm winter ambient temperatures at altitudes above 4,500 ft., vehicle idles rough or has unstable rpm at low speeds (under 5 mph). Any vehicle experiencing this condition also requires a replacement evaporative purge solenoid.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

1998 Eclipse 2.0L DOHC non-turbocharged manual transmission models produced before 10/14/97

PROCEDURE

1. Using the MUT-II scan tool, check to see if any DTCs are set in the PCM. If any DTC except DTC 118 (P0172) is set, follow the appropriate troubleshooting and repair instructions in the service manual. Then go to Step 2.

2. Gather the equipment which is contained in Reprogramming Kit MIT992000-A as shown:

Do not install the cartridge into the Reprogramming Unit at this time.

3. Attach the EATX III/Engine harness to the Reprogramming Unit. Refer to page 6 of the Reprogramming Unit Instruction Manual.

4. Set the switch on the harness black box to the side labeled ENGINE.

5. Connect the EATX III/Engine harness 16-pin and 12-pin connectors to the vehicle's data link connector.

6. Install Reprogramming Cartridge MIT992013 into the Reprogramming Unit.

7. Follow the displayed instructions on the Reprogramming Unit screen.

CAUTION:
DO NOT DISTURB THE HARNESS CABLES OR CONNECTIONS. INTERRUPTION DURING THE PROGRAMMING PROCESS COULD CAUSE THE PCM TO LOSE DATA OR PREVENT FUTURE PCM REPROGRAMMING.

8. The display will ask if you want to change the controller part number. Select Yes. Reprogramming will begin.

NOTE:
If the PCM has already been reprogrammed for this condition, the displayed current and replacement part numbers will be the same, or the message "BREAK NOT SEEN" will display. If so, do not continue with this procedure.

9. Current and replacement PCM part numbers will display. The replacement part number will be M05269833A1. Record the replacement part number displayed.

10. When completed, disconnect the reprogramming unit and the EATX III/Engine harness.

11. Using a ball-point pen, enter the replacement PCM part number (recorded in Step 9), your dealer code, and the current date on the Control Module Label.

12. Affix the Control Module Label to the side of the PCM.

13. Using a ball-point pen, enter the replacement PCM part number, this TSB number (TSB-98-13-003), your dealer code, and the current date on the Engine Compartment Label.

14. Carefully remove all dirt and oil from the vacant area shown on the underside of the hood. Affix the Engine Compartment label in the area shown.

15. If the vehicle idles rough and/or has unstable rpm at low speeds (under 5 mph) during hot spring/summer or abnormally warm winter ambient temperatures at altitudes above 4,500 ft., replace the evaporative purge solenoid. Use the part listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.
