Electrical/Lamps - Intermittently/Totally Inoperative

No.: TSB-01-54-007

DATE: May, 2001

MODEL: 1999-01 Galant

SUBJECT:
WIRING HARNESS CORROSION

PURPOSE

Various chassis electrical concerns may be the result of damage or corrosion in the front chassis wiring harness. Possible electrical concerns and their affected wiring are:

^ Inoperative high beam headlight, fog lamp, windshield washer, and intermittent/high speed wipers. Open circuit due to corrosion at the orange/black wire from pin 17 of the front ECU (connector A-09X) to pin 3 of the column switch ECU (connector C-60).

^ Radio loses memory, inoperative dome light power door locks, and RKE transmitter. Open circuit due to corrosion at the red/black wire from dedicated fuse # 4 in the engine compartment relay box to pin 12 of connector C-84 in the passenger room junction box.

The affected harness areas are located in the left fender well area. This bulletin describes inspection and repair procedure procedures for eliminating and preventing corrosion at these areas of the wiring harness.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

1999-2001 Galant models produced before 3/14/01 (VIN 4A3AA46G31E174000)

PROCEDURE

1. Raise the vehicle and remove the left tire and wheel assembly.

2. Remove the left front wheel splash guard.

3. Locate the exposed (un-taped) section of wires in the front chassis wiring in the left front fender area.

For easier access to the wires, unclip the harness from the body in this area.

4. Inspect the exposed wires for any evidence of damage or corrosion. Remove the black electrical tape about two inches on each side of the exposed wires to inspect under the tape for possible damage or corrosion. Use care to prevent damaging the wires when removing the tape.

a. If no corrosion or damage is found, refer to the appropriate electrical troubleshooting procedure in the service manual to determine the cause of the problem. Wrap the wires with electrical tape only where the tape was originally. To allow for moisture drainage, do not install electrical tape on the previously un-taped portion of the harness.

b. If any corrosion or damage is found, replace the bad portion with a new piece of equal or greater diameter gauge wire.

(1) Solder the new wire ends. Apply 3M Electrical Moisture Sealant # 06147 or equivalent to the new wire.

(2) Wrap the wires with electrical tape only where the tape was originally. To allow for moisture drainage, do not install electrical tape on the previously un-taped portion of the harness.

5. Resecure the harness to the body with the clip.

6. Reinstall the left front wheel well splash guard.

7. Reinstall the left front tire and wheel assembly.

8. Confirm that the electrical concern has been eliminated.
