Headliner - Sags Out of Sunroof Trim

No: TSB-00-52A-009

DATE: November, 2000

MODEL: 1999-2001 Galant

SUBJECT:
HEADLINER SAGGING OUT OF SUNROOF TRIM

PURPOSE
This bulletin contains repair procedures to correct a condition where the headliner may sag out of the sunroof trim.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Symptom
Air may get behind the headliner during vehicle operation with the sunroof open. The headliner may then come loose from the sunroof trim and sag, making the edge of the headliner visible.

Remedy
Repairing this condition involves installing dual-lock fastener between the sunroof chassis and the headliner at the rear of the sunroof.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
1999-2001 Galant equipped with factory installed sunroof built before 10/23/00

PROCEDURE

1. Remove the trim around the perimeter of the sunroof.

2. Pull down carefully on the headliner at the rear center of the sunroof opening to create a gap large enough to access the sunroof chassis for dual-lock installation.

3. Wipe the area on the sunroof chassis where the dual-lock is to be installed, as indicated in the illustration, with isopropyl alcohol to promote adhesion

4. Cut a 50 mm long piece of dual-lock fastener from the high-density roll (3M 06484 with adhesive backing). Peel off the backing.

5. Firmly affix the 5Omm piece of dual-lock fastener (dual-lock # 1) in the center registration mark indentions on the rear of the sunroof chassis as shown.

6. Cut a second corresponding 5Omm piece of 3M 06484 dual-lock fastener with adhesive backing from the low-density roll (dual-lock # 2) and attach it onto the first piece that is affixed to the sunroof chassis. Do not peel off the backing at this time.

7. On the back side of the headliner, mark off an area approximately the size of the dual-lock now mounted on the sunroof chassis. This area should be directly below the dual-lock.

8. Using 3M 08061 Plastic Adhesive, apply three beads of adhesive about 1/8 inch in diameter along the 50 mm length of the marked area on the sunroof. There should be a bead at each edge of the marked area and one in the center.

9. Using an acid brush, smooth out the adhesive, working it into the headliner material. Make sure the adhesive surface is smooth and even. Let the adhesive dry for about 45 minutes.

10. When the adhesive surface on the headliner has set for at least 45 minutes, peel off the backing of dual-lock # 2 already mounted onto dual-lock # 1 on the sunroof chassis.

11. Quickly and evenly press the headliner so it contacts with the dual-lock fastener and hold for 60 seconds. Refer to the illustration in Step 6.

! CAUTION
Apply gentle pressure so that the headliner material is not damaged. To protect the headliner, use a piece of cardboard.

12. Reinstall the sunroof trim. You may have to pull down slightly on the headliner to secure the headliner trim satisfactorily. Be careful. DO NOT unfasten the dual-lock when pulling down on the headliner.

PARTS INFORMATION
The dual-lock fasteners required for this repair can be obtained from your local 3M distributor. Dual- lock and adhesive are not available from MMSA Parts.

NOTE:
3M 06484 Dual-Lock fastener comes in a package containing two rolls of dual-lock materials; one roll of high-density material, and a corresponding second roll of low~ensity material. MAKE SURE THAT THESE ARE USED TOGETHER. DO NOT USE A HIGH-DENSITY PIECE OF DUAL-LOCK MATED TO ANOTHER HIGH-DENSITY PIECE OR VICE-VERSA.
