A/C - Blower Motor Failure

No.: TSB-03-51-001

DATE: January, 2003

MODEL: 2002-03 Lancer

SUBJECT:
HVAC BLOWER MOTOR FAILURE
(WIPER PIVOT SHAFT GROMMET INSTALLATION)

PURPOSE

This bulletin contains procedures for installing special wiper pivot caps (grommets) onto the wiper pivot shafts to keep water from entering the blower motor. Water entry can cause blower motor failure.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
2002-03 Lancer built before September 25, 2002

PROCEDURE

Refer to Group 51, WINDSHIELD WIPER AND WASHER in the service manual.

1. Remove both wiper/wiper arm assemblies.

2. Place a new grommet on each wiper pivot shaft. Be sure to put the correct grommet on its shaft. The grommet for the driver's side wiper shaft is marked with a "D". Some passenger's side grommets are marked with an "A" while others may not be have this mark. You can also determine the correct part by looking at the height of the grommet. The passenger's side grommet is the taller of the two and the outside edges rise from the bottom at a steeper angle than the driver's side. See the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.

3. Using a flat screwdriver, press the new grommet downward until it slides down and rests completely under the front deck garnish. Repeat for the other side. See the photos for correct installation position.

4. Reinstall both wiper blade/wiper arm assemblies. Make sure each wiper arm attachment nut is tightened to the standard value; 13 +/- 2 Nm (111 +/- 22 in-lb). Reinstall the nut covers. Check wipers for proper operation.
