Engine/AWD System/Tires - Inherent Noises

No.: TSB-03-00-014

Date: August, 2003

MODEL:
2003 Lancer Evolution

SUBJECT:
NORMAL NOISE CHARACTERISTICS (LANCER EVOLUTION)

PURPOSE

Some noises reported by Lancer Evolution owners are normal operating noises inherent to this vehicle. The Lancer Evolution is equipped with an all-wheel-drive system and has large tires with an aggressive tread pattern. To meet customers' performance expectations, design priorities of the engine and drivetrain are foremost on load bearing capacity, reliability, and performance; quietness is the second priority. To reduce weight, minimal sound deadening materials are used on this vehicle under the carpeting and against the bulkhead. As a result, there are noises heard inside the vehicle that are inaudible in other types of vehicles.

The following noises are normal characteristics of the Lancer Evolution. Dealers should not attempt repairs to eliminate:

^ Growling or whirring noise heard from the transmission or transfer case, usually on deceleration from about 5,000-2,500 rpm

^ Humming noise from the tires when slowing to a stop, becoming loudest below 20 mph

^ Whooshing or whining noise under hard acceleration due to turbo operation and manifold pressure increase

^ Friction or squeaking noise from brakes under hard application. There may be an intermittent squeak when brake temperatures are very high.

Be sure that Lancer Evolution owners view the sales video "Lancer Evolution Pit Pass", which mentions some of the normal noise characteristics of this vehicle.
