PROCEDURE
5th/Reverse Synchronizer Sleeve Configuration
There are two different types of 5th/reverse synchronizer sleeves. One is grooved around the outside edge on one side, the other has no groove, but instead has paint markings on one side. The groove or paint mark is used as a installation direction indicator during transmission assembly. These parts are interchangeable.
The groove or paint marking indicates the installation direction for the sleeve when assembling it onto the transmission shaft. Make sure the grooved side or paint mark is installed toward the reverse gear when installing the sleeve onto the transmission shaft.
NOTE:
If a 5th/reverse synchronizer sleeve without the groove is to be reused during a transmission overhaul, mark the side of the sleeve toward the reverse gear so you can install the gear correctly during transmission reassembly The original paint mark on the gear without the groove can disappear with use.
5th/Reverse Synchronizer Hub & Sleeve Installation
Install the synchronizer sleeve so the three sets of two longer teeth with raised tips are aligned with the areas on the hub that have deeper grooves between the teeth (three sets total).
CAUTION
DO NOT position the synchronizer hub with the synchronizer sleeve's three sets of longer teeth in the detent gaps of the synchronizer hub. The sleeve's longer teeth with the raised tips must be positioned into the deeper grooves in the hub. Otherwise, the transmission will not shift properly.
