No: SC-04-002

DATE: June, 2004

MODEL:
2004 Galant

SUBJECT
ETACS-ECU REPLACEMENT FOR EXCESSIVE 'IGNITION OFF' BATTERY DRAIN & 'NO START'

PURPOSE

This campaign bulletin contains instructions for replacing a faulty ETACS unit on certain 2004 model year Galant vehicles.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Symptom

Affected vehicles may exhibit a dead battery condition. This will usually happen after the vehicle has sat idle for 7 to 10 days. Vehicles driven daily will not typically exhibit the condition.

Cause

A software programming error in the ETACS-ECU causes the vehicle's electrical system to draw excessive current when the ignition switch is in the OFF position. The ETACS-ECU software error in no way affects the normal operation and driving of the vehicle.

Remedy

Replace the ETACS-ECU on affected vehicles with a new part which has the correct software programming.

Customer Notification

A letter will be sent to all registered owners asking them to return their vehicle to their Mitsubishi Motors dealer for ETACS-ECU replacement.

Dealer Action

Check the VIN number of each suspected vehicle to verify that this service campaign applies. Replace the ETACS-ECU on any affected customer's vehicle and on any vehicle you have in your dealership inventory. Contact any purchaser of recently sold vehicles and have them bring their vehicle in for repair. Recent sales may not have been registered in time for the customer notification letter. For US dealers, a list of vehicles in your dealership inventory at the time of this campaign is included with this bulletin.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

PROCEDURE

IMPORTANT

Refer to Group 54 in the service manual for ETACS-ECU replacement information.

1. Charge the battery if it does not start the vehicle. Normally, the battery will not require replacement for this condition. After the battery is fully charged, check to make sure it starts the vehicle. If so, proceed with step 3.

2. If the battery starts the engine properly, proceed with step 3.

3. Remove the lower instrument panel cover on the driver's side and replace the ETACS-ECU with the new part (P/N 8637A052). Reinstall the instrument panel cover.

4. Reprogram all the vehicle's remote keyless entry transmitters.

a. Check that the doors lock normally when the key is used.

c. Connect the V.C.I. to the data link connector.

d. Within 10 seconds of switching the V.C.I. power switch to the ON position (green LED), press the hazard warning light switch six (6) times.

NOTE:
After the hazard warning light switch is pressed six times, the ETACS-ECU locks and unlocks the doors automatically once The ETACS-ECU is now ready to reprogram the remote keyless entry transmitters (register the encrypted code).

NOTE:
The hazard warning light switch is a toggle switch.

e. Press a transmitter button, then press it again two times within 10 seconds of the first press. This will reprogram the transmitter.

f. The the transmitter is programmed, the ETACS-ECU automatically locks and unlocks the doors once.

g. If two or more transmitters are to be programmed, repeat the above procedures within one minute after completing step d.

IMPORTANT
Transmitter registration/reprogramming will cancel under the following conditions:

^ When four transmitters have been programmed.

^ When one minute has passed after registration/reprogramming mode is started.

^ When the V.C.I. is disconnected.

^ When the ignition key is removed from the ignition switch.

h. After all transmitters are registered/reprogrammed, turn the ignition switch to the LOCk (OFF) position, disconnect the V.C.I., then remove the ignition key from the switch. Close all doors, then check to make sure the keyless entry system operates properly.
