Interior - Headliner Sagging at Rear of Sunroof

No: TSB-04-52-002

DATE: September, 2004

MODEL:
2004 Galant

SUBJECT:
HEADLINER SAGGING AT REAR OF SUNROOF

PURPOSE

The headliner on some vehicles may come loose from the sunroof trim at the rear of the sunroof. This condition is typically due to air buffeting behind the headliner when the vehicle is moving with the sunroof in the fully open position.

Follow the procedures in this bulletin to install Dual-Lock fastener to repair this Condition and prevent it from reoccurring.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
2004 Galant models equipped with sunroof

PROCEDURE

1. If the headliner is sagging, reposition it under the sunroof trim. Ensure that there is sufficient headliner overlap (at least 6 mm) at the rear of the sunroof trim as follows:

a. Gently peel back the rear edge of the sunroof trim.

b. Measure the sunroof trim overlap at the edge of the headliner.

^ If the overlap is at least 6 mm, the overlap is sufficient. Go to Step 2 for Dual-Lock installation.

^ If the overlap is less than 6 mm, continue with Step c. below to move the headliner forward before installing the Dual-Lock.

c. Remove the sunvisors. Remove the inboard sunvisor clips. Loosen the outboard sunvisor clips.

d. Remove the coal hanger hook (located above the left rear seat).

e. Remove the three headliner retaining clips located near the rear glass.

f. Move the headliner forward (toward the front of the vehicle) until there is at least a 6 mm overlap at the sunroof trim.

g. Reinstall the headliner retaining clips, coat hanger hook, sunvisor clips and sunvisors.

CAUTION
DO NOT USE VELCRO FOR THIS REPAIR. VELCRO WILL NOT SUFFICIENTLY HOLD THE HEADLINER. USE ONLY THE DUAL-LOCK FASTENER SPECIFIED.

2. Remove the sunroof trim and install Dual-Lock fastener 3M 06484 as follows:

a. Prepare four pairs (8 pieces total) of the high-density type Dual Lock, each piece 1 inch (25 mm) square. Press the paired pieces firmly together.

b. The Dual-Lock will not properly adhere to the roof center beam unless the surface is clean. Use isopropyl alcohol to clean the roof center beam surface at the four places shown.

c. Remove the backing from one side of the Dual-Lock, and firmly install one pair at each of the four center beam areas that were cleaned.

d. On the headliner, mark four areas corresponding to the Dual-lock locations.

e. Apply a bead of Plastic and Emblem Adhesive (3M 08061) to each of the four marked areas on the headliner. Then use an acid brush to spread the adhesive at each spot to a 25 mm area for the Dual-Lock to be installed.

Allow the adhesive to dry for 45 minutes.

f. Remove the backing from the other (exposed) side of the Dual-Lock, and apply firm pressure to the headliner for one minute with the palm of your hand. Use care to prevent damage (such as denting) to the headliner.

g. Reinstall the sunroof trim.

Replace the sunroof trim if it has a warped appearance (does not flatten properly).
