Campaign - ABS Sensor O-Ring MIssing

No: SC-04-003

DATE: June, 2004

MODEL:
2004 Galant w/ABS

SUBJECT:
REAR ABS SENSOR 0-RING INSTALLATION

PURPOSE

This service campaign bulletin contains information and instructions concerning the inspection and installation of rear ABS sensor 0-rings

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Symptom/Condition

ABS sensors without 0-rings were installed on some vehicles.

Remedy

0-rings must be installed on the ABS sensors for improved durability.

Customer Notification

A letter will be sent to all registered owners asking them to return their vehicle to their Mitsubishi Motors dealer for inspection and repair.

Dealer Action Summary

For all affected vehicles, both unsold in your dealership inventory and sold customer vehicles, remove the rear ABS sensors to determine if the 0-ring is installed. If there is no 0-ring, clean the area where the sensor is installed, then reinstall the sensor with a new 0-ring.

Contact any purchaser of recently sold vehicles and have them bring their vehicle in for repair. Recent sales may not have been registered in time for the customer notification letter.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
2004 Galant ABS equipped vehicles built before March 12, 2004

PROCEDURE

Refer to service manual Group 35.

1. Remove the rear ABS sensors from the knuckles. Removal of any of the sensor harness is not required.

2. Inspect the sensor for the presence of the 0-ring. If there is an 0-ring installed, reinstall the ABS sensor and skip to step 8. If there is no 0-ring, proceed with step 3.

3. Inspect the sensor for rust. If rust is present on the sensor, wipe off the rust. The rust should be easily removed from the stainless steel sensor. If rust cannot be removed by wiping the sensor, use a non metallic cleaning material such as a Scotchbrite pad to clean the magnetic sensor. Then use a vacuum cleaner to pick up the loose rust particles.

4. Place a new 0-ring onto the sensor body. Make sure the 0-ring is seated tightly against the sensor body and that there is no gap.

5. Clean the knuckle and the 0-ring seating surface. Make sure the seating surface is free of any foreign material. As with the sensor, use a non-metallic material for cleaning. Remove any loose or flaking rust with a vacuum cleaner. Be careful that no debris falls into the bearing area.

6. Inspect the sensor rotor teeth through the sensor hole in the knuckle. Some slight surface rust is normal. If there is heavy flaking rust, remove the bearing and clean the sensor rotor with a non-metallic material (Scotchbrite pad). Using a vacuum clean the bearing pocket of any loose rust before reinstalling the bearing.

7. Reinstall the ABS sensor with the new 0-ring. Make sure there is no gap between the sensor and knuckle.

8. Connect the scan tool, then drive the vehicle to verify that the vehicle speeds displayed on the speedometer and the scan tool are identical.

PARTS INFORMATION

A quantity of 0-rings will be automatically shipped to all dealers (except those in Puerto Rico). Orders for additional 0-rings can be placed through the normal parts system.
