Audio System - Radio Comes ON Suddenly By Itself
No: TSB-03-54-010DATE: December, 2003
MODEL: See Below
SUBJECT:
RADIO COMES ON SUDDENLY
PURPOSE
This bulletin contains information concerning a condition where the radio suddenly comes on even with the audio system switched to the OFF position.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Symptom
The radio may suddenly turn on when the ignition switch is in the ON or ACC position, even if the audio system switch is OFF. The condition does not occur if a CD is in the player. This condition will not occur when the ignition switch is in the OFF position, so there is no chance of the battery going dead while the vehicle is parked.
Cause
The LED chip in the audio system may have been damaged during production. The damaged LED may mistakenly determine that a CD was inserted then ejected when no CD is actually in the player slot. This determination error then causes the chip to turn on the radio as is normal when a CD is ejected.
Remedy
Replace the AM/FM/CD radio/player on a customer complaint basis only.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
The condition described in this bulletin may occur on any of the following vehicles built between April 2003 and October 2003.
2004 Lancer
2004 Lancer Sportback
2004 Diamante
PROCEDURE
If you identify this condition, replace the radio with an exchange unit obtained from the Panasonic Audio Exchange Center. See the Parts Information section of this bulletin for replacement part information. For instructions for replacing the radio, refer to Section 54 of the service manual.
