Recall - PCM Reprograming for VSS/OBD Concerns: Overview

No: EMR-05-002

DATE: October 10, 2005

MODEL: 2005 Lancer, Outlander

SUBJECT:
PCM REPROGRAMMING FOR VSS MALFUNCTION - EMISSIONS RECALL CAMPAIGN

PURPOSE
Certain affected vehicles have incorrect parameters in the PCM software that
may allow a malfunction in the vehicle speed sensor to go undetected by the Onboard
Diagnostic System (OBD). A faulty vehicle speed sensor, if undetected,
could allow the vehicle to release pollutants in excess of emissions standards.
Dealers must reprogram the PCM as described in this bulletin. Affected vehicles
that are not reprogrammed may fail an Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) Smog Test.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
2005 Lancer and Outlander models equipped with 2.4L SOHC engine and
manual transmission built between 6/22/04 - 6/30/05 (approximately 2,000
vehicles)

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
A letter will be sent to all owners of affected vehicles, telling them to bring their
vehicle to a Mitsubishi Motors dealer to have the PCM reprogrammed at no
charge. A copy of the customer notification letter appears later in this bulletin.
