SUBJECT:
A/T SHIFT CABLE ADJUSTMENT FOR DTC P1770 OR P0705
PURPOSE
The customer may complain of the transaxle shifting from 4th to 3rd gear without moving the shift lever. The MIL may come on, DTC P1770 and/or P0705 may set. This condition is typically due to improper shift cable adjustment.
Follow the shift cable adjustment procedure in this bulletin before replacing any parts, as cable adjustment may eliminate the condition.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
2006 Galant equipped with 2.4L 4G69 engine and A/T
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the air duct and air cleaner element to access the Park/Neutral position switch.
^ Refer to Group 15 in the 2006 Galant service manual.
2. Inside the vehicle, move the shift lever to Neutral.
a. The manual control lever on the top of the Park/Neutral position switch should be aligned with the block underneath it.
3. To hold the lever in place during cable adjustment, temporarily insert a 5 mm drill bit through the inside hole in the shift lever as shown.
4. Loosen the cable lock nut. Push the cable toward the rear of the vehicle to remove the slack from the shift cable.
5. Tighten the cable lock nut to 12 +/- 2 Nm (107 +/- 17 in/lb).
6. Remove the drill bit that was installed in Step 3.
7. Inside the vehicle, move the shift lever to Park. Confirm proper shift lever operation.
a. If necessary, slightly readjust the manual control lever to achieve proper shift lever operation.
8. Reinstall the air cleaner element and air duct.
NOTE:
You may need to adjust the PCM bracket to allow proper air cleaner installation.
9. Use the MUT-III to clear all DTCs.
10. Test drive the vehicle to ensure this condition has been eliminated.
a. If the condition continues, refer to Group 23A in the 2006 Galant service manual for DTC P1770/P0705 diagnosis procedures.
