SERVICE INFORMATION

On some 1987-1989 Stanza vehicles, water mist/fog may be discharged from the center vent or water may leak from the heater floor outlet during air conditioner operation. This condition usually occurs during periods of high temperatures (85~F and higher) and high humidity (80% or more). Check to see that the evaporator drain hose is not kinked and the evaporator drain hole is not plugged. If the condition still exists, install the countermeasure screen kit described below to the evaporator, using the Service Procedure found in this Technical Bulletin.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Remove cooling unit from vehicle. Refer to Section HA in the Service Manual. Cap both the cooling unit and the vehicle pressure tubes while installing the screen kit.

FIGURE 1:

2. Remove the following (Figure 1):

^ the inlet and outlet seals from cooling unit case.

^ the 7 clips that attach the upper cooling case to the lower cooling case. Save the clips.

^ the resistor bucket (with resistor) from the upper cooling case

FIGURE 2:

4. Remove the lower case half from the evaporator coil assembly.

5. Remove the thermistor probe and plastic harness attaching clip from the evaporator coil (Figure 2).
6. Remove the upper cooling case half from the evaporator.

7. Install the 4 screen retaining clips to the holes in the screen.

FIGURE 4:

8. Align the screen over the evaporator coils by centering the oval hole over the clip and the thermistor probe holes in the coil assembly (Figure 4).

FIGURE 5:

9. Attach the screen to the coil assembly by pushing the 4 clips into the evaporator coils. The tabs on the clips should lock onto the coil assembly ribs (Figure 5).

FIGURE 6:

10. Install the coil assembly into the upper case half.

11. Install the thermistor probe through the screen and into the coil in the same location as before. The thermistor probe should extend 1-1/2 inch (40 mm) into the evaporator.

12. Reuse the plastic harness attaching clip to secure the thermistor probe (Figure 6).
13. If the packing on the coil assembly sides is damaged, replace it with similar urethane foam tape.
14. Install the resistor bucket (with resistor) to the upper case half.

15. Install the lower case half over the evaporator. Make sure the pressure tube seal is positioned correctly between the upper and lower cases.

16. Install the 7 clips to hold the cases together. After installing the clips, check to make sure the screen is not interfering with the styrofoam case insulation. Remove and adjust the screen position as necessary.
17. If the cooling unit case was equipped with rubber inlet and outlet seals, reinstall them. If the cooling unit case was equipped with foam inlet and outlet seals, install the new seals from the kit.

NOTE:
The longer seal is for the outlet side.

18. Install the cooling unit. Refer to Section HA in the Service Manual for instructions.

NOTE:
Be sure to replace the inlet and outlet O-rings with new O-rings. Apply refrigerant oil sparingly to the O-ring and seating surface. Torque O-ring connector to appropriate specification in Service Manual.
