Band Servo/Accumulator Assembly Inspection Procedure

FIGURE 1:

NOTE: The control valve body must first be removed. Refer to the "Control Valve" page in the "On-Vehicle Service" section of the appropriate Service Manual for additional details.

1. Remove the battery and its bracket.

2. Remove the air cleaner, air flow meter, air ducts, air resonator (U11, N13), and solenoid valves (U11, N13), as an assembly.

BE CAREFUL NOT TO DAMAGE THE AIR FLOW METER.

3. Disconnect control cable and throttle wire then remove throttle lever (see Figure 1).

FIGURE 2:

4. Remove the upper cover.

5. Disconnect the harness connectors on the control valve body.

6. Remove the control valve body bolts highlighted in Figure 2.
7. Remove the control valve body.

CAUTION: Be careful not to drop the manual valve out of the control valve body.

8. Remove terminal assembly.

CAUTION: The terminal retaining hooks will break if they are forced inward too far. Bend them gently inward while carefully pulling outward on the terminal. Do not pull on the wires.

FIGURE 4:

The band servo/accumulator assembly is located at the front of the transaxle as shown in Figure 4.

FIGURE 5:

9. Remove the servo retainer snap ring (see Figure 5).

FIGURE 6:

10. Remove the servo retainer and accumulator as an assembly with compressed air applied to the servo apply port. (See Figure 6.)

FIGURE 7:

11. On U11 models remove the servo piston snap ring as shown in Figure 7.

NOTE: Be careful not to damage inner surface of the servo retainer.

FIGURE 6:

12. Remove the servo piston assembly (all models) and servo piston retainer (N13, T12, M10 models only), with compressed air applied to the servo release port (see Figure 6).

13. Inspect the servo piston bore in the transmission case for scratches, scoring or contamination. See the chart below for Condition/Procedure.

FIGURE 9:

14. Disassemble the accumulator piston from the servo retainer. (See Figures 8 and 9.)
15. Remove all four lathe-cut seals and all three O-ring seals. (Only one O-ring seal is used on the U11 model.)

16. Inspect the sealing surfaces of the servo piston retainer (except U11), accumulator piston, and servo piston, for scratches or scoring. If your fingernail catches on any scratch or score mark, replace the affected component.

17. Reinstall lathe-cut seal No. 4 in the servo retainer.

18. Install the accumulator piston into the servo retainer and test-stroke the accumulator piston. The seal should offer some resistance to movement.

19. Remove the accumulator piston from the servo retainer and remove seal No.4.
20. Conduct a similar test (Steps 17-19) for the remaining seals.

21. If no discrepancies were noted in Steps 13, 16, 18, or 20, the problem probably lies elsewhere in the transmission. Refer to the Service Manual for further information.

22. Replace ALL the lathe-cut and o-ring seals, whether or not any problems were noted.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

The band servo/accumulator lathe-cut seals are not included in the overhaul gasket and seal kit. When overhauling a transmission, be sure order the appropriate servo seal kit and replace all seals.

23. Reassemble the accumulator piston to the servo retainer (refer to Figures 8 and 9).

24. Reinstall the servo piston assembly, servo piston snap ring (U11 only), servo retainer/accumulator assembly, and servo retainer snap ring.

NOTE: Verify that the snap ring is in place by compressed air check.

FIGURE 10:

25. Tighten the band anchor end pin (Figure 10). Anchor end pin 4-6 N-m (0.4-0.6 kg-m, 2.9-4.3 ft.lbs.)
26. Back off the anchor end pin 5-1/4 turns.

27. Tighten the lock nut while holding the anchor end pin stationary.

Lock nut: 31-42 N-m (3.2-4.3 kg-m, 23-31 ft.lbs.)

FIGURE 11:

28. Install the terminal assembly while paying attention to the direction of the hook.
27. Install the control valve body to the transmission case while paying attention to the direction of the grooves in both the manual valve and detent valve.

FIGURE 13:

30. Tighten the control valve body bolts as follows:
Arrow marks:
3.7 - 5.0 N-m (0.38 - 0.51 kg-m, 2.7 - 3.7 ft.lbs.) Others:
7 - 9 N-m (0.7 - 0.9 kg-m, 5.1 - 6.5 ft.lbs.)

31. Set throttle shaft return spring as shown below.

FIGURE 15:

32. Connect harness connectors between terminal assembly and solenoids (see Figure 15).

FIGURE 16:

33. Put gasket on transmission case and install valve cover and throttle lever.
34. Reconnect the control cable and throttle wire. Verify proper control cable operation and throttle wire adjustment as described in the AT Section of the Service Manual under "On-Vehicle Service".

35. Reinstall the air cleaner, air flow meter, air ducts, air resonator (U11, N13), and solenoid valves.

36. Reinstall the battery bracket and battery.

37. Recheck the A.T.F. fluid level and test drive the vehicle.
